“Marriage is to help married people sanctify themselves and others. For this reason they receive a special grace in the sacrament which Jesus Christ instituted. Those who are called to the married state will, with the grace of God, find within their state everything they need to be holy”St. Josemaria Escriva
THE FIRST STEP: DISCERNMENT
During the busy months leading up to a wedding, preparation for the festivities often takes centre-stage. While planning for the reception and honeymoon is important, we invite you to consider that a happy and enduring marriage also requires conscious preparation, beginning with the process of discernment. This should be an affirming experience, as you and your fiancé develop a deeper understanding of yourselves, each another, and your readiness to enter married life.
Are you both mature, able and willing to put your beloved’s needs before your own?
Are you free to give the total gift of yourself to your beloved?
What do you want from life and marriage?
Do you share the same idea of what marriage is?
Good discernment also explores the values required to build a relationship that can outlast the difficulties that life can bring and alerts you to the attitudes and virtues which you will need to cultivate.
If you are planning to marry in the Catholic Church, please contact your parish priest six to nine months before your anticipated wedding date to begin the marriage preparation process.
JOY FILLED MARRIAGE COURSE
The John Paul II Centre for Life offers marriage preparation and enrichment, in conjunction with parishes, through a two-part seminar:
God’s Plan for Love helps couples encounter and understand the true beauty of marriage in God’s design and how it fits into his overall plan for human life. During the course couples are encouraged and challenged to embrace that plan and make it their own personal way of life. Topics include sexual honesty, marriage as a sacrament, and inviting God as the “third strong strand” in the marriage. (Ecc 4:12)
Life Skills for Couples offers couples key insights into the true nature of marriage and human sexuality. Couples are introduced to the profound importance of virtue in achieving a joy-filled marriage. Topics include: resolving conflict, communicating love, managing time, money and energy, fostering intimacy.
The entire course offers a foundational understanding of the human person through the lens of the ground-breaking teaching of Pope Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.
